He hai been sher iff for twenty-four years and will doubtless be re-elected. The Farmers' Bxrumluu. The steamer Trout brought down on Friday last a large number of farmers with their wives and daughters and sons from Jones county. There were about twohundr.d on board and tbey had a very pleat. o ' time notwithstand ing the thunder shower which came up about 1 o'clock prevented their trip to Riyerdale as they expected. They took dinner on the picturesque banks of the Trent river before arriving at New Berne and all were in a good humor. It is encouraging to see these annual farmers' dinners and excursions grow ing in popularity. Every neighborhood should have its farmers' gathering at least once a year. Such gatherings are calculated to inspire kindlier feelings between neighbors and show that life is worth living. Our Jones county friends will accept thanks for an invi tation to be with them. But for other pressing duties on that day we certainly should have been there. The Storm on Sunday. We had a severe thunder storm again on Sunday . and several places were re ported struck by lightning. One was a tenant house on the farm of E. R. Dudley, just outside the city limits. The lightning struek the house, setting it on fire, and in passing off killed a hog in a pen near by. All of the occupants cf the dwelling were at church except a little boy. He was considerably shocked, but succeeded in running to a neighboring house and telling of tho accident and securing aid to extinguish tho fire before well under ay. The grist mill of J. A. Meadows was also struck, but no serious damage was done. There was also a report that the tele graph office at the railroad station was hit, but we believe that was not the case, ihe telephono wires down outh Font street were ablaze with electricity observable to those in the immediate neighborhood, but we hear of no damage further than slight injury to tho posts along the line. At one point the electric fluid left the wires and slayed down a plot of growing corn. The thunder and lightning was severe and accompanied by considerable wind and a very heavy rain. We learn that the workshop of Mr, Calvin Debruhl at Deep Gully was greatly damaged by the wind. The storm extended gome distance into the country, but we hear of no further damage except too much ram for the crops . Jones County Items. C. E. One colored gentleman who become thoroughly disgusted with his meeting and its proceedings, requested me to aay henceforth and forever he expected to act and vote with the Democrats. The Democrats of Jones county held their county convention on Saturday Last to eeject delegates to State. Con- pe8iorial and Senatorial 1 conventions. Dr. Fred Whitaker presided aa chair man and Jas. F. "White waa secretary. The proceedings were smooth and har monious. Resolutions were adopted endorsing the administrations of Presi dent Cleveland and Governor Scales. F. M. Simmons, of New Berne, was recommended for Congress, and the delegatee appointed to the Congression al convention were requested to use every honorablo effort to secure his nomination. Pollobsville was recom mended as tbe most suitable and con venient place to hold the convention of the 9th Senatorial convention composed of Onslow, Carteret and Jonea. After the business of the convention had been disposed of. the township com mittees of the several townships organ ganized and elected a county executive committee and they elected for their chairman Mr. Samuel Hudson, sr., of Polloksvillo. We are now thoroughly organized and in good working order. Our peo ple appear interested iu all our meet ings. ou may expect to near a goo.i report from us at the next election. I omitted to state in its proper that the convention recommends for Supreme Court Judges, Gilmer, Strong and Mer- rimon. I have not found a single man in our county who claims to be a Demo crat but what is an enthusiastic Sim mons man for Congress. Simmons will certainly, if nominated, poll a largo vote in Jones county, as every man is ready and willing to roll up sleeves and work for him. The Republicans of Trenton township had a meeting on Saturday evening last composed of about 150 colored voters and but four whites all told. The meet ing was organizod by calling Mr. J. C, Moore to the chair and appointing J.W. Bryan secretary. The chairman ex plained that the meeting had met to select three delegatos to attend the county convention to convene at Tren ton on Saturday next. After this ex planatiou, a colored gentleman arose and remarked that if he couia get a seconder, ho would move that Paul Meadows be elected a delegate to the county convention. nen up rose a white gentleman and moved to amend that move by substituting one Murrill iu Meadows place. This move appeared to dot the meeting on fire, some crying question' question!' order' order" Set down! Some screaming out in every part of the houso. Mr. Chairman, listen at me! while nearly everyone had gath ered in a circle around tho chair and the thermometer over Uu. The worthy chairman looked perplexed with hat in hand and fanning while the crowd was shoving, pulling, hollering, stamping, slambing on the tables with sticks; at last one colored gent cried out let's rest for lo minutes, which was readily obeyed (1 thought they needed it, for they appeared exhausted . During this interval, the motion to appoint Meadows was largely voted down. After this, the -cenu was beyond the comprehen sion of anybody for at least an hour, whun again a indt wad called ami some one moved the rq lntment of Shade Hill, and during the confusion, h- was 1 elected After this nothing could b d .no The nil le house was .l.outing Mr. Chuinmeii. in.-t one word! Dear Journal: I have just re'-urned from rarnlico county nnd feel like tell ing yon and your renders p.imethiag about the resources of that remarkable section ana lie peopie always iuaoy v ; dispense their hospitality to grangers On my way down I met quite u num ber of tho delegates returning fr..m tho Congressional convention nt Elizabeth City and had a pleasant ride with my old friend J. O. Baxter to Stonewall, his home. After crossing Broad creek four miles from New Berne we ener Pamlico, and with the exception of tho sand ridgo extending below Grants boro. on which many people who cwn the rich swamp lands live, the land is very rich. After passing Mr Cam pen's, about 4 miles from Bayboro I had occasion to leave .the muiu road leading from New Bertie to Stonewall and go in the neighborhood of Mr. Pen McCotter. At his house I found an opening extending in the direction of Uie New Ditch settlement in whioh was growing the finest oottou and com 1 ever saw. In reply to ray question as to the quantity of corn and cotton raised by a farmer owning throe horses I learned that he usually made from 13 to II bales of cotton and .100 Imrrele of corn. Mr. C. II. Fowder. of Stonewall, said the corn crop was excellent and that New Ditch settlement, he thought, would make 10,000 barrels. At Bay- j boro I attended preaching Sunday and i beard a good discourse by the Rev. Mr. ' Jonee, after which I spent the evening ; very pleasantly at Sheriff Hooker's. I . also met a Lenoir county boy. Dr. j Gates, who has located at Bayboro, and ' I was glad to learn that ho is pleased with his now home and the ooplo aro pleased with him. Among tho business men whose acquaintances I formed were Mr. W: H. Sawyer, Mr. West end J. . Cowell. The latter conducts tho business carried on under the firm namo of Fowlor & Cowell. I also paid W. T, Caho, attorney at law. n Bhort City Congressional convention and had i just returned, finding a lot of busmen j accumulated for his disposal. His orTIcA in on tllA second floor of a ImiM inir ' . M Caho is likely to be the recipient of Son- -atorial honors from his district. I be lieve that the stream mentioned above ,' is only a creek that enters Bay river; for 1 in leaving Bayboro we cross Bay river ! to get to Stonewall. At the latter town ' live my old school boys. SamT Ferrebee and Rufus Baxter. SamT lives with, his mother and conducts successfully . the mercantile business of Ferrebee Bros., and is mayor of the to.-.-n. : Rufus, thinking, it not good for man to dwell alone, married Miss Florence ! Hamlin and they arc numbered among j the house-keepers of Stonewall. , Rufus and his father J. O. ! Baxter, Esq., assist Mr. C. II. Fowlor in carrying on his large mercantile business. Mr. J. O. Baxter has boon in Mr. Fowler's employ for 17 years, which alone speaks a volume in his be half when it is known that Mr. Fowler is one of the most successful merchants of this State. Among the enterprises of Stonewall, I noticed the large saw mill now owned and run by Messrs. Eukins or Co. , of Philadelphia, and managed by Mr. A. II. Whitcomb. The capacity of this mill is 16,000 feet per day and is located in Bay river, so that vessels load this lumber easily and take it North. This mill not only converts tho pine on the rivors and creeks into boards, but tramways lead ing into the densely wooded swamps enable it to utilize the beech, cyprass and gum. In tho middle of these swamps the growth is small and the mud is so rich and soft that reeus, growing to the height of 10 and 1.1 feet when cut down, can be pushed down in this mud out of sight. I am able to judge of the progress made in this county since I yisited it six years ago and spent sometime viewing its fertile lands. Much ditching and clearing have been done, and theeo f ertileswamps are now converted into level fields that produce the most abundant crops of I corn. There is also a marked.differenoe I in tho character or the buildings on the j different roads. Samuel Ferrebee. ever ready to take his friends out for a d rive, took me out in the direction of Trent creek to Mr. Thos. Sawyer's. On thin road I noticed some nicety-painted, two-story dwellings, farms in good con dition and crops fine. These people like ours have had too much rain, aud their cotton seems to bo somewhat dam aged. It being late, we did not fo any further than Mr. Sawyer's, but learned that the lands aro equally as good further on. Most of these people have cisterns and save rain water for drink ing purposes. They also are alive. in educational matters, building up schools in their raidst and vending their sons and daughters oil to high sehs.lM and colleges. I regret not having tune to visit V tn- demere and seo tho lands ami crops in the New Ditch settlement as w .-II us the country from Mr. Thus. Sawyer's around to Baird's creek. Tli. se i'uinhco people are not having a great deal to say about the resouiceu ot incur county, but arc quietly developing them; and if good roads, improved farms, comfortable dwellings, well- filled barns and good stock are evi dences of prosperity, they are prosper ous. I visit Pamlico with plnusi.ro and leave it with regret. Jos. hi.N .iA w iranilonti Koapo. W W.
